Q1: Can students be tested for a possible learning disability?

A: Currently, the College of Southern Idaho does not do any testing. Students enrolled who desire to be tested should contact their personal physician for a referral to the appropriate testing agency.

Q2: Are students with disabilities eligible for handicap parking?

A: Only with a valid handicapped license or placard from the Department of Motor Vehicles. For more information, access Vehicle Services Forms and Publications.

Q3: Is wheelchair accessible housing available on campus?

A: Yes, there are accessible rooms at Eagles Hall. For additional information, please call New Student’s Information at 732-6221. There is also a list of contacts and numbers for Off-campus accessible housing, not necessarily addresses of apartments, complexes, or housing in Twin Falls, Idaho. The college does not “screen” these options, so students are responsible for determining the suitability of each listing.

Q4: How can students get extended time for the COMPASS Test?

A: Students need to visit with the Coordinator of Student Disability Services to determine if they are qualified for an extended time for testing. If there is documentation of such services is needed then the accommodation can be arranged through the office of Disability Support Staff.

Q5: Are there special Financial Aid resources available to students with disabilities?

A: Based upon demonstrated need, all students, including students with disabilities, are eligible for Federal Financial Aid and scholarships. There is a wide range of scholarships for specific disabilities. (Click here for the list)

Q6: Are computers available for disabled students to use?

A: Yes, the College of Southern Idaho has several computer labs on campus for student use. The Canyon Computer Lab and the Library have specialized assistive technology. It may be necessary for the student to complete training on this equipment prior to operating the equipment in these labs.

Q7: I crushed my dominate hand and in the process broke two fingers week. Can the SDS help me?

A: The Student Disabilities Services (SDS) can help students with temporary disabilities. Contact the office to see how DSD may be able to assist in finding the temporary support you might need.

Q8: I have a learning disability. Can I receive services from the SDS?

A: It is recommended that all students with documented learning disabilities speak with the Student Disabilities Services Coordinator to determine what their appropriate accommodation(s) are based on their individual needs. When a disability impacts the major life activities of an otherwise qualified student, the student is often eligible for services.

Q9: I have ADD. What services are available to me through Student Disability Services?

A: Any service provided by SDS is given on an individualized basis according to the student’s needs and documentation of the student’s disability. Please contact our office, provide documentation and request the services you feel you need.

Q10: I receive extended time for exams as an academic accommodation. My professor says I must take all my exams at the Testing Center. Why?

A: Extended time can be provided during the class examination period. However, sometimes, due to scheduling conflicts, extended time is not available immediately before or after the class. In those cases, the Testing Center is available to administer and proctor examinations. More and more professors are choosing to use the Testing Center as a regular testing site which allows more time for in-class lectures. When eligible, extended testing time is available at the Testing Center when scheduled through the Student Disability Services. If this process is not working for you, we encourage working with your instructor and SDS toward a solution.

Q11: Why can't I park in handicapped parking spaces if I'm on crutches?

A: Handicapped parking spaces are reserved for individuals who have been certified by a state Department of Motor Vehicles. If you feel you need the handicapped parking space, then you will need to provide a letter from your physician stating the need, be it either temporary or permanent, and present the letter to the Department of Motor Vehicles. They are the only agency who can legally issue a valid handicapped placard. The College of Southern Idaho is not authorized to determine eligibility.

Q12: I have a disability and I wasn't required to take a foreign language in high school. Do I have to take one in college?

A: There are several factors taken into account before consideration is given for a foreign language substitution. Students should refer to the College’s Policies and Procedures for specific information.

Q13: Are there accessible apartments off campus?

A: There are accessible rooms at Eagles Hall. For additional information, please call New Student’s Information at 732-6221.
