Del Parkinson - "Preludes and Pictures" 9/19/2014
Time: 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

Del Parkinson, Professor of Piano at Boise State University, will perform a piano recital, “Preludes and Pictures.” The program will juxtapose two monumental nineteenth-century works. Frederic Chopin wrote 24 Preludes, each exquisitely crafted and profoundly expressive. Modeste Mussorgsky created Pictures at an Exhibition, transforming artworks into musical imagery that portrays an imaginary tour of an art collection. The two composers hail from divergent nationalities; their unique backgrounds and differing aesthetics yield a stark contrast between the two major works. Parkinson will share information and insights about the origins of each piece. Works of art will be projected as a representation of the moods depicted in each piece. The program will blend narration, visual images, and live performance. “Chopin’s gorgeous, memorable melodies will linger in the mind and Mussorgsky’s picturesque musical rendering of artworks will touch the soul,” said Parkinson, who has recorded seven CDs and is included on the international roster of Steinway artists.
