The Herrett Center for Arts and Science at the College of Southern Idaho announces spring break planetarium shows and afternoon drop-in activities for the entire family, Mar. 21 to 25.
The Faulkner Planetarium offers an expanded public show schedule with 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. shows Tuesday through Friday. These shows are in addition to the regular schedule of planetarium shows. The ‘Explore Herrett’ program offers free activity classes from noon to 3 and 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
From noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Mar. 21 will be Treasure Boxes; participants will use the art of collage to decorate treasure boxes to take home. Sun Catchers will be the Wednesday activity. Create decorative window hangings using colorful tissue paper and other items. Feel free to bring your own leaves or flowers to use if you like. Mask Making is the activity for Thursday. Create your own colorful mask using feathers, sequins and other materials. Fling It Friday is back on Friday, Mar. 24. Try your hand at using an atlatl to throw a spear, just like Idaho’s prehistoric hunters.
The daily 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. Explore Herrett activity, Paper Airplanes, ties in with the new planetarium show opening Tuesday, Mar. 21, Dream To Fly, which traces the history of humankind’s desire to fly to the first manned flight attempts. Dream To Fly will run at 2:30 Tuesday through Saturday and at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Saturday. Regular admission prices apply for Dream To Fly; there is no charge for the Paper Airplanes activity.
The planetarium is offering other shows as well. The 1:30 p.m. shows during the week are One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure on Tuesday, Perfect Little Planet on Wednesday, The Accidental Astronauts on Thursday and Solar System Odyssey on Friday. The 3:30 p.m. show each day is Eclipse: The Sun Revealed. This show reveals the mysteries behind solar eclipses and prepares the audience for the total solar eclipse that will slice across central Idaho on Aug. 21 of this year, an event not to be missed.
Additionally, the center is offering a planetarium ticket promotion during spring break. Purchase regular price tickets to any planetarium show and receive $2 off your tickets to any other show on the same day. You will be required to purchase the tickets to both shows at the same time. This ticket special is only good March 21 to 25.
The Herrett Center is open to the public 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and 1 to 9 p.m. Saturdays.
