Del Parkinson in Concert 9/13/2013

The recital, called “My Favorite Gershwin,” will feature some of his best-known works, including four song transcriptions and excerpts from “Porgy & Bess” and “An American in Paris.” The program will culminate with a performance of “Rhapsody in Blue.” Gershwin is considered America’s finest Broadway and classical composer. The presentation will incorporate visual images to dramatize the famous composer’s life story. The accompanying narration will traverse his fascinating formative years, a formidable career on Broadway, and an astonishing shift to incorporate Broadway and popular tunes into classical music. “Everyone loves the music of George Gershwin. It contains memorable melodies, fresh harmonies, and toe-tapping rhythms. Gershwin truly is the quintessential American composer,” said Parkinson, who has recorded seven CDs and is recognized on the international roster of Steinway artistsDel Parkinson began studying piano at age five in his hometown of Blackfoot, Idaho. He now holds a doctor of music degree from Indiana University and a postgraduate diploma from The Juilliard School. He was the recipient of a Fulbright-Hays grant for graduate study in London. He was coordinator of piano instruction at Brigham Young University-Idaho, where he taught for eight years, and is now professor of piano at Boise State University, where he joined the faculty in 1985. Admission is $5 per person.
