Course Description: This class combines two courses. STUS 011, Basic English, will develop and reinforce understanding of basic English grammar skills. STUS 013 provides an introduction to the strategies and skills needed for writing in college and the workplace. Emphasis is placed upon sentence skills and application of grammar and upon writing a well-organized, effective thesis with support.
Prerequisite: CSI entry test -- all students must have a current COMPASS pretest placement score.
Required Text: Basic Grammar and Usage - Choy, McCormick Fifth Edition
Other resources: Videotapes and computer programs, on-line grammar labs (see instructor)
Course Objectives: Students will demonstrate an understanding of grammar through class participation, completion of exercises, unit mastery, midterm and final tests, and editing practices. They will then apply these grammar principles as well as basic organizational models in their own writing.
Policies:
Attendance: Attendance and class participation are mandatory. Four hours of lecture/discussion will be required each week, and students with more than eight absences may be dropped from the class. It is the student’s responsibility to make up missed work due to absence.
Honesty: Students are expected to be fair and honest, and those students guilty of cheating on tests or submitting someone else’s work as their own will fail that assignment or test and, if the offense warrants, will fail or be dropped from the course.
Homework: Students should schedule two hours outside of class for every hour in class (eight hours each week) to review notes, complete homework assignments, and prepare for the following class session. Homework will be turned in at the instructor’s discretion and will not be accepted late.
Testing: One retake test is provided for each unit, and the better of the two grades will be counted. Students must arrange for and take retakes within one week after tests are returned.
Grading: Grades will be based upon the following approximate percentages:
STUS 011 - Ten unit tests (55%), graded assignments & pop quizzes (15%), midterm & final (30%)
STUS 013 - Eight written assignments (80%), and final in-class writing (20%).
Grades are assigned on the following scale:
|
90-100% --A 80-89% -- B |
60-69% -- D |
Incomplete(I) may be arranged if the student has completed over half of the coursework and must miss class due to illness or other extenuating circumstances. |
|
Below 60% -- F |
Outcomes Assessment: Student outcomes will be documented through pre and post testing, a writing portfolio, and pre/post essays. Pre and post tests are required for students to advance out of Basic English although these tests will not be averaged into the student’s grade. Students must keep a writing portfolio containing all completed writing assignments to submit at the end of the semester. Passing students who do not take the post test or submit a portfolio will receive an I. Students will also submit a final outcomes essay which will be evaluated by a committee of English instructors and graded as proficient or not proficient. Passing students who are judged to be not proficient may have their writing portfolio judged by the committee to establish proficiency. If writing is still not proficient, the student will be given a grade of NC and will be required to retake the course. Failing students or those who have done less than 70% of the writing assignments will not be allowed to submit an outcomes essay.
