ADC - Adult Basic Education

Overview

The Adult Basic Education Program is designed to improve the educational level of adults, out-of-school youth and non-English speaking persons in our eight-county service area. Our program recognizes the worth and importance of the individual who has less than a high school education and the need for community-based instruction.

Description

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program at the College of Southern Idaho provides an opportunity for adults ages 16 and up to receive free tutoring to improve basic skills and/or learn English as a Second Language (ESL). You may E-mail questions to Ruth Scott .

Basic Skills Volunteers Program (BSV) is a tutoring project of the ABE program. The coordinator matches adult students in our community who wish to improve their skills in reading, writing, math, or ESL with adults who have volunteered to tutor. Tutors and students work three to six hours a week at a time and place that is convenient to both of them. Tutors may also choose to work in a classroom to assist an instructor or help coordinators by distributing literature to promote the program. Volunteers are also needed to help with clerical duties. A high school education or equivalent and a willingness to help others are qualifications needed to become a tutor. High school students (16 and over) and College students are welcome to tutor. Volunteer tutor hours are documented and a good addition to your resume.

Student needs are assessed, volunteers are trained, and all materials are provided. Services are available throughout the eight-county area of Southern Idaho.
