About the Keynote Speakers
Tom Brazelton, MD, MPH, FAAP Dr. Brazelton received his MD and Master’s in Public Health at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, pediatric training at Children’s Hospital in Oakland, and fellowship training at Children’s Hospital in Boston. He is board-certified in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He is the Medical Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit within the American Family Children’s Hospital, Medical Director of the Pediatric Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program, and is the Medical Director of the American Family Children’s Hospital Critical Care Transport Program. Until recently he has been very active in the state Department of Public Health as chair of the Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) program (2002-2008) and has been a leading voice for pediatric prehospital emergency care. As such, he was the first pediatrician ever appointed by the Governor of Wisconsin to the EMS Advisory Board, the group that determines the scope and practice of EMS care in Wisconsin. He is active at a national level as a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), having served on the Executive Committee of the Section on Transport Medicine. He also represents the AAP through his service on the Board of Directors of the Committee on Accreditation of EMS Training Programs (CoAEMSP), overseeing accreditation of Paramedic training programs nationally.
The majority of Dr. Brazelton’s time is spent in activities including medical student, resident and fellow education, regional health care provider education, direct patient care and administrative activities. He serves on many committees within both the Department of Pediatrics and the University of Wisconsin Hospital as chair of the Department’s Performance Improvement Committee and co-chair of the hospital’s Peer Review Committees, responsible for Pediatrics Department- and Children’s Hospital-based peer review, respectively. He also serves on the Quality Coordinating Council of UW’s American Family Children’s Hospital, the UW Hospital & Clinics’ Resuscitation Review, Critical Care, Pharmacy & Therapeutics, and Respiratory Care Committees.
Kirk E. Mittelman, M.Ed., NREMT-P Kirk retired in 2001 from Provo City Police after 21 years. Kirk is the Director of Professional Programs for the University of Utah and owns Mt Nebo Training. Kirk teaches all levels of EMT’s and wilderness medicine and directs the Paramedic Program that is held at the University in cooperation with Mt Nebo Training. Kirk also works part time as a Paramedic Firefighter for Lone Peak Fire District. In his spare time Kirk travels to 3rd World countries as a volunteer teaching EMS to physicians, nurses and EMS personnel. When things get too hectic Kirk can be found waterskiing and enjoying the sun at Lake Powell.
