COURSE DESCRIPTION:
this course provides a foundation for exploring classical yoga postures as well as yoga history and philosophy. Each class will include yoga stretching, strengthening and relaxation. There will be pre and post semester testing for flexibility.

COURSE PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES:
The students will learn a variety of yoga poses, how to improve their posture and relaxation methods.

Teaching Methods:
1. Guided class participation in learning yoga postures and relaxation techniques.
2. Assignments: Students will be required to write a short paper on Yoga. Subject to be approved by instructor. Students will watch a Yoga video outside of class and write an evaluation.

GRADING:
Attendance and assignments earn points as described below:

A = 90 to 100 points
B = 80 to 89 points

CLASS POLICIES:
Missed Classes: Students may have three absences and still have 60 points for attendance. Each absence over three will take away 10 points.

OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT
1. Outcome: Students will increase their knowledge of yoga postures.
Assessment: Students will be observed performing the yoga postures.
2. Outcome: Students will increase their flexibility.
Assessment: Students will have pre and post semester flexibility testing.
3. Outcome: Students will learn how to teach the yoga postures.
Assessment: Students will have the opportunity to teach a portion of the Yoga Class.

YOGA COURSE OUTLINE:
1. Each class will include warm-up stretches, more vigorous yoga poses followed by cool down and relaxation for the last 10 minutes.
2. Every four weeks we will have the emphasis on a new pose, learning various ways to perform this pose and the anatomy involved in the pose.
3. We will test flexibility pre and post semester.
4. Students will be given handouts describing various poses.
5. Students will be encouraged to have a home yoga practice.
6. Students will be given the opportunity to teach a portion of a class during the last week of the semester.
7. Students will learn the Sanskrit words for the various yoga poses.
