COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course is conducted in two groups.  The first group is for people interested in participating in various indoor recreational activities.  The second group is for those who have their own physical training programs and desire to work on their own.  The program is designed for adults of all ages.

SYLLABUS

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

Instruction and participation in fundamentals of Bowling for the student’s recreational pleasure.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Introduction to bowling that will include: mechanics of the game, bowling fundamentals, outcomes, terminology, safety, rules, as well as scoring techniques.

I.                    Introduction to Bowling

III.               Outcomes – Introduction to bowling

1.      Equipment and tips for beginners

a.       Ball selection

1.       Balls vary in weight from 8lbs. to 16lbs.

b.      Determine ball best suited for each bowler.

1.      The heavier ball provides greater in action.

2.      Slightly lighter ball provides better control and accuracy.

3.      Conventional 3 hole grip vs. 2 hole grip

c.       Determine finger grip

IV.              Performance outcomes-Mechanics of the game and bowling fundamentals

1.      Starting position of the body and ball

a.       Understand and explain how to find correct starting distance from the foul line.

b.      Perform and demonstrate ball position at starting point.

c.       Perform and demonstrate body position.

d.      Understand the visual cues or check points at starting point.

2.      Approach and footwork – understand and demonstrate

a.       Push-away (the trigger to start the body movement) and balance.

b.      The four or five-step delivery and length of steps to reach delivery point property.

c.       Straight line steps toward target and smooth approach.

d.      Slide at the point of delivery

e.       Visual cues or check points

f.        Pendulum swing of the delivery arm.

1.      Straight ball is released with thumb at 12 o’clock and ring finger at 5 o’clock. Right handed and left handed – thumb at 12 o’clock and ring finger at 7 o’clock.

2.      Hook is released with thumb at 10 o’clock and ring finger at 4 o’clock – right handed /left handed – thumb at 2 o’clock and ring finger at 8 o’clock.

3.      Curve is released with thumb at 9 o’clock and ring finger at 3 o’clock right handed; ring finger at 9 o’clock and thumb at 3 o’clock left-handed.

4.      Back up ball is released with thumb at 1 o’clock and ring finger at 7 o’clock right handed – left handed thumb at 11 o’clock and ring finger at 5 o’clock.

3.      Spot bowling

a.       Understand the bowlers focus of attention is on a designated target arrow (not pins).  The second arrow from the right gutter for right handed bowlers and the second arrow from the left for left handed bowlers.

b.      Demonstrate the delivery shoulder position at the release; in line with the target arrow.

c.       Understand if the ball misses the pocket right the bowler moves the starting (strike) stance right and visa versa (for left handed bowlers).

4.      Bowling for spares

a.       Understand and demonstrate the 2-4-6 method of picking up spares.

b.      Understand and demonstrate the strike stance the first ball of each frame and on left side spares.

c.       Understand and demonstrate the 10 pins stance for right side spares.

d.      Understand and demonstrate the target adjustment necessary to pick up spares.

5.      Scoring technique

a.       Understand the game consists of 10 frames and you roll two balls each frame unless you get a strike.

b.      Understand and demonstrate the proper marks used in scoring.

c.       Understand and demonstrate the proper method of keeping track of the bowlers score for game.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

            25%  Class attendance participation

            50%  Improvement on bowling average

            25%  Written Exam
