TEXTBOOK: Fit and Well Core Concepts and Labs in Physical Fitness and Wellness by Thomas Fahey, Paul Insel & Walton Roth
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Activity-By-Contract is designed for the motivated student who wants a self-paced, flexible exercise experience for credit. The student is expected to read selected chapters in the text, complete lab assignments and exercise at least 3 hours per week. The exercise program emphasizing all components of fitness - flexibility, strength and endurance - must be carefully recorded on a weekly log sheet and turned into the instructor between Tuesday and Thursday of each week. During the first 8 weeks each student completes lab experiences from designated reading assignments in the text, in addition to tracking exercise sessions.
OBJECTIVES:
1.)
Give students the opportunity to assess their current fitness level through
designated hands-on lab experiences from text and the interactive multi-media
Trifit 600 wellness technology.
2.)
Assist students in the design of an effective exercise program to meet individual
goals.
3.)
Monitor progress on a weekly basis.
4.)
Increase student’s knowledge base on basic principles of physical fitness and
appropriate program design for safe, fun, effective use.
5.)
Give students a sense of personal control in selecting convenient work-out times
when other classes may not fit demanding class, work or family schedules.
COURSE PROCEDURES:
1.) Introduction
a.) Meet with instructor for general instructions.
b.) Make appointment for fitness assessment at sign-up sheet, Gym Conference room, Trifit 600.
c.) Complete written contract for weekly expectations.
d.) Find personal mail folder next to instructor’s office door - room 222.
2.) Weekly
Expectations:
a.) Design an exercise program, and write down each completed exercise segment on log sheet.
b.) Hand in log sheet and completed lab experiences between Tuesday and Thursday each week.
c.) Pick up new log sheet in your personal mail folder at room 222
Instructor is available for individual consultation Tuesday 10:00a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or other times by appointment, by E-mail or FAX (734-0245).
If the instructor does not have dialogue or completed log or lab experiences within a 2-week period, the student will be dropped from class.
Honesty in recording log sheets and prompt delivery of completed logs and labs is expected.
Each student is encouraged to select multiple activities that promote flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and strength from the following list of choices:
1.)
Fitness walking.
2.)
Jogging.
3.)
Bicycling-stationary/outdoor.
4.)
Aerobic dance, swimming, circuit weight training.
5.)
Cross training. (a combination of aerobic activities)
6.)
Exercising with an aerobic videotape.
7.)
Using other individualized aerobic equipment, i.e., the stair climber, rowing
machine.
8.)
Weight training.
9.)
Stretching, Tai-Chi, Yoga.
10.)
Other approved activities.
The CSI fitness center in the new addition is available for you to use during the following hours:
6:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. Monday through Friday
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.4:00 - 8:00 p.m.
10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Saturday
Your instructor, the fitness facilitator or attendant can assist you as you develop an aerobic/weight-training program on campus. The membership card is free to students.
EVALUATION:
A. Complete
pre and post Trifit 600 fitness assessments by appointment.
Complete
all text labs, log at least 2-3 hours of exercise per week, and hand in on weekly
basis.
Complete final written assessment
B. Complete pre and post Trifit 600 fitness assessment by appointment.
Complete three/fourths of lab experiences and a minimum of 24 hours of exercise throughout semester.
Complete final written assessment.
C. Complete pre Trifit 600 fitness assessment
Complete one/half of the lab experiences and a minimum of 24 hours of exercise.
Complete final written assessment.
PHYE ACTIVITY-BY-CONTRACT SCHEDULE
Week 1
v Sign up for 20-minute individual appointment for Trifit 600 fitness assessment located in the gym conference room.
v Chapter 1:read "Introduction to Fitness", "Wellness and Lifestyle Management".
v Complete and hand in Lab 1-1 "Lifestyle Evaluation".
v Complete and hand in Lab 1-2 "Completing a Contract".
v Hand in Exercise Log for the week.
Learning objectives:
v Identify the major health problems in the US and principal causes.
v Define physical fitness as a part of wellness.
v List behaviors that constitute a healthy lifestyle.
Week 2
v Chapter 2: read "Basic Principles of Physical Fitness".
Learning Objectives:
v List components of physical fitness
v Identify principles in creating a balanced exercise program.
v Know safety precautions in successful exercise programming.
Complete and hand in:
v Lab 2-1 Calculating your Activity Index
v Lab 2-2 Safety of Exercise Participation.
v Exercise log for the week.
Week 3
v Chapter 3: read "Cardiorespiratory Endurance".
Learning Objectives:
v Learn the major benefits of cardiorespiratory endurance exercise.
v Explain F.I.T. or frequency of exercise, intensity, duration or time-in action to affect endurance.
v Know best ways to prevent and treat exercise injuries.
v Complete and hand in one of the endurance tests in Lab 3-1 that best suits your preference. If you wish to do a bicycle ergometer test, make an appointment with instructor.
v Complete Lab 3-2, components 1, 2, 3, 4 only.
v Hand in completed exercise log.
Week 4
v Chapter 4: read "Muscular Strength and Endurance".
Learning Objectives:
v Define muscle strength and endurance.
v Know common weight training exercises to increase strength.
v Know how weight training affects muscles.
v Complete Lab 4-2 and hand in.
v Hand in completed exercise log.
Week 5
v Chapter 5 Read "Flexibility".
Learning Objectives:
v Know the different types of stretching exercises, the factors that determine the flexibility of each joint and the value of stretching regularly.
v Extra credit this week: Complete Lab 5-1.
v Hand in exercise log for this week.
Week 6
v Chapter 7: :read "Putting Together a Complete Fitness Program".
v Optional Evaluation: your instructor can measure your body composition using skinfold calipers, if you are interested.
v Hand in completed exercise log.
Week 7 or 8
v Choose one of the following chapters that may be of particular interest to you:
Chapter 8 "Nutrition".
Chapter 9 "Weight Management".
Chapter 10 "Stress".
v Complete the labs attached to the topic of your choice
Weeks 9-14
v Continue to hand in completed exercise logs on a weekly basis.
Weeks 14-16
v Make appointment to retest using Trifit 600 and complete written assessment from instructor.
NOTE: If you are a student who has taken the class for credit in a previous semester, you will be responsible for Fit and Well labs 8.1, 8.2, 9.1, 9.2 and 11.1.
