AEROBIC WEIGHT TRAINING
PHYE 118
Aerobic Weight Training is designed to allow students an opportunity to participate in a practical exercise program for credit. Each student must be willing to participate in 3-4 hours of exercise per week in a structured setting.
The student is required to participate in a variety of strength, cardio respiratory and flexibility activities, keep a log to monitor personal fitness goals and achievements, and complete pre and post fitness assessments.
The student will improve fitness skills in a structured, supervised setting. The student must warm-up and cool-down prior to and following activities to supplement aerobic and strength training as well as for safety.
SPECIFIC COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. To
promote an understanding of the role of exercise and physical fitness.
2. To
briefly acquaint students with basic human anatomical structures and their
functions related to physical activity.
3. To
acquaint students with the components of physical fitness.
4. to
develop an awareness of individual fitness needs.
5. To
develop skills for practical evaluation of physical fitness status.
6. To
develop an adequate understanding of body mechanics, nutrition, obesity, stress,
physical fitness and the value of regular exercise.
7. To
assist students in planning their own individual exercise program.
8. To
prepare students for a lifetime of exercise.
GENERAL COURSE PROCEDURES:
1. Meet
during scheduled class sessions for assignments and classroom work.
2. The
student must hand in an exercise log and lab assignments on due date.
3. The
instructor will be available during posted office hours.
4. Attend
lab on Thursdays.
5. Attend
exercise class sessions 3 days per week
6. ATTENDANCE
IS CRITICAL FOR SUCCESS IN THIS COURSE!!!!!
EVALUATION CRITERIA:
Grading:
25% = Attendance/Participation
25% = Completed Exercise Logs and Labs
25% = Quiz Evaluation over Material Presented in Class
25% = Final ProjectABSENCES:
1 Absence = A
2 Absences = B
3 Absences = C
4 Absences = D
5 Absences = F
*Absences may be made up under instructor’s or fitness facilitator’s supervision at a scheduled time. Please be aware that you may only miss 5 days of class total. These absences may be made up to maintain your grade, but any beyond those will not be included in make-up days and will lower your grade one letter grade per absence.
STUDENT OUTCOMES:
1. The
student will increase stamina by improving cardiovascular endurance.
2. The
student will develop other components of fitness, flexibility and muscular strength.
3. The
student will manage stress and health through regular fitness participation.
4. The
students will have the ability to maintain their own fitness goals.
5. The
student will have proficiency in basic anatomical structure and function.
CLASS OUTLINE: (Labs meet in room 104 Thursdays)
-Each of you will be required to complete the signed laboratory exercises in the text and turn them in. The pages are perforated so that you may tear them out and turn the original in.
-We will have written quizzes and a final project over the course of the semester. We will review for each quiz in a classroom setting and you will be assigned partners for your final project.
