How to Rock Climb by John Long (suggested)
Course Description
Instruction and participation in the skills necessary to rock climb safely in a variety of environments. Participation in one weekend overnight climbing trip is required. Student furnishes or rents his/her climbing equipment and pays a fee for the class. Welcome to the world of climbing. The primary goal of this course is to introduce you to the skills necessary to sagely negotiate this three dimensional world. You will learn basic safety techniques necessary to set up and climb top rope climbs under the supervision of experienced climbers.
This course will not provide you with the necessary instruction to safely climb in an unsupervised environment. Climbing is dangerous, the safety techniques discussed in this class are minimal and do not provide you with the skills necessary to venture outside unsupervised (including but not limited to sport climbing, traditional climbing, ice climbing, ice climbing, and mountaineering). It is your responsibility to seek further instruction if you wish to climb on your own.
You will, however, become comfortable hanging from your fingertips and ascending through a milieu of ever changing hand and footholds. You will learn a large repertoire of movements that make the seemingly impossible, probable. Associated with overall climbing improvement are increased coordination, strength, endurance, and flexibility. Exercises and activities will be designed on an individual basis to maintain strengths and improve weakness, a strategy that quickly improves your movement skills.
Course Objectives and Evaluations:
1. Outcome: The student will improve/maintain overall climbing ability.

Grading:
Attendance =70%Journals =10%
Safety requirements =10%
Pre and Post Evaluations =10%
Each class participant will
be required to keep a journal, which accurately depicts your individual training
regime. It should also contain your Pre and Post evaluation results and comments,
which reflect personal goals you have set relating to this course.
We will meet once a week, Tuesdays 4:00pm-8:00pm, usually at the CSI maintenance
building. One absence will be allowed without a grade deduction, after which
your grade will be lowered one letter grade per absence. This is necessary
since one absence is equal to a week of missed class. In lieu of the last scheduled
meeting time students will be required to participate in an overnight weekend
climbing trip. Failure to participate in this trip will result in you being
dropped from the class. For this trip you will need to provide you own basic
camping gear and food. The school provides transportation.
Other Requirements:
1. Health History Form (return promptly to instructor): If anything on the health history changes during the course of the semester (pregnancy, medications, injuries, etc.) please notify instructor immediately.
2. Comfortably fitted clothes, which allow freedom of movement.
3. Additional course fee of $20.00.
