COURSE NUMBER:            PHYE 138
SEMESTER HOURS:          1 credit
TITLE:                                   Beginning Racquetball                                               
INSTRUCTOR:                     Brian Hancock

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Designed for the beginning player to acquire or improve his/her knowledge and fundamental skills in racquetball.  Instruction includes rules, game strategies, technique for serving, forehand and backhand mechanics.

PREREQUISITE:

Appropriate clothing and shoes are required to play on indoor hardwood floor courts.  Racquets and balls are provided.  A $20.00 additional fee is required and is subject to change.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

To develop the participant in skill learning and to enhance their abilities.  The students will gain an appreciation for racquetball.  It is hoped that in playing during class and having interaction among students, the individuals will enjoy playing and competing with each other. 

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

1.)        Required attendance unless the person is sick, injured, or has special circumstances.

2.)        Class meets two hours a week for the entire semester (8/28-12/18).

3.)        Missed classes can be made up, if Okayed by the instructor.

4.)        Appropriate conduct and sportsmanship are essential to the class.

5.)        A safety and etiquette presentation proceeds actual playing on courts.

6.)        Grading will be judged on attendance and a student’s willingness to participate.

OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT:

1.)        Through practice and drill work, students will perform the individual skills necessary to progress their abilities.

2.)        Through demonstration and participation, the student will learn the proper techniques for proper forehand, backhand and overhead serves.

3.)        A presentation on rules and strategies through demonstration and a question/answer session will help students acquire an appreciation for playing.

4.)        By the end of the class all students will be acquainted with singles, cutthroat and doubles play.

                        a.         Playing the Game.

                        b.         Common Do’s and Don’ts on Basic Strokes.

                        c.         The Serve and Return of Serve.

                        d.         Four Vital Defensive Shots.

                        e.         Beginner’s Pitfalls.

           

2).        Racquetball Strategies:

                         a.        Offensive Strategy.

                         b.        Playing the Back Wall.

                         c.        Center-Court Strategy.

                         d.        Doubles.

                         e.        Winning Tactics.

3).        Official Rules of the United States Racquetball Association.
