COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Over 60 and Getting Fit is a course designed to address the fitness needs of the mature adult: cardiovascular activities - walking and/or other low intensity aerobic movement, flexibility and strength training, using body resistance or therabands. Participants are encouraged to do only those activities appropriate for their individual needs.
PREREQUISITE FOR CLASS:
8:45 - 9:00 “Early Bird” participants are welcome to use the upstairs track for walking before class begins.
9:00 - 9:30 Fitness walking - includes warming up, standing stretches and guided aerobic walking combinations. (Main gym floor)
NOTE: Shoe soles must be wiped off before walking on gym floor.
9:30 - 10:00 Stretch and strength will meet in Gym 236. Students interested in using weight equipment with supervision during this time can do so for a reduced fee of $25. per semester. Checks made out to CSI can be given to Jan or Jean, Fitness Center Supervisor.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
The benefits of exercise for older adults who may be managing a wide range of chronic ailments include:
Facilitates weight reduction.
Enhances insulin effects for people with diabetes.
Retards rate of progression for osteoporosis.
Slows the decline of maximum aerobic capacity.
Reduces risk of cardiovascular diseases, some forms of cancer and other disorders.
Assists the mobility of arthritic joints.
Reduces anxiety and depression.
Increases self-esteem, self-efficacy, a sense of community and an opportunity for fun.
