About the NMR Spectrometer at the College of Southern Idaho

The Anasazi EFT-60

The Anasazi EFT-60 was installed in April, 2000.  It is an upgrade of a Varian EM360L CW instrument.  A C13 accessory was installed with the upgrade.  All of the original controls have been replaced by a standard microcomputer and two units from Anasazi Instruments.  Only the “box” containing the original magnet and sample compartment remains from the original Varian instrument.

Acknowledgement - Funding for this instrument was made possible through the Special Projects Grants in Chemistry program of the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation with matching funds from the Office of the Vice President of Instruction and the College of Southern Idaho Foundation, Inc.

Major Components

The “box” containing the magnet (1.4 Tesla) and sample compartment is the large unit on the right next to the lab bench.  Next to it on the floor are the two Anasazi control units.  A Micron microcomputer sits under the table.  The table holds the monitor, HP printer, mouse and keyboard.

This computer controls the instrument and permits easy exportation of data to word processing and spreadsheet programs.

The WinPNMR Program

The instrument is controlled by the WinPNMR program.  Parameters are entered in this program and the experiment is then executed.  The program collects data in the form of a free-induction decay signal (FID) as shown in the illustration.

The WinNUTS Program

When data collection is complete the FID is transferred to the WinNUTS program.  WinNUTS performs a Fourier transform on the FID to generate a conventional NMR spectrum.  At this point the spectrum is usually just printed, but WinNUTS has many other features for processing and presenting the data.   It is also handles 2D NMR and other advanced techniques.
