Mission Statement

The mission of the Library and Information Science Department is to provide a meaningful educational experience that meets current and emerging library, information and technology needs, and prepares students for productive roles in a variety of continually evolving information environments, or to continue their education at four-year institutions. The department also provides basic library skills and information literacy training for CSI students in general, and provides training, consulting, professional development, and continuing education opportunities for library and information service professionals in the area.

Vision

The Library and Information Science Department envisions a society where all individuals, regardless of location, economic status, language, age, or any other factor, are able to freely and easily access, retrieve, and use information and knowledge to empower them to lead full and productive lives.

The department is committed to excellence in service that supports the mission of the College, as well as encourages and supports lifelong learning.

Goals and Objectives

Carry out its mission, the Library and Information Science department established the following goals and objectives:

  1. Provide quality advising and counseling for students considering to enter the library and information science profession.
    • Assist students with understanding the various career choices available in the field.
    • Help students understand the qualifications needed for those positions.
    • Help students with selection of appropriate courses, in the appropriate sequence, in order to ensure that they meet their educational goals.
    • Assist students who wish to continue their education at four-year institutions.
  2. Ensure that LIIS students acquire the knowledge, skills, and values that are fundamental to professional competence in the library and information services field.
    • Provide high quality, effective and relevant instruction and experiences in a student-centered and technologically advanced learning environment.
    • Foster engaged learning and discovery, and encourage students to take responsibility for their learning.
    • Effectively incorporate current and emerging relevant instructional and information technologies throughout the curriculum.
    • Maximize accessibility of our courses by making the LIIS program a completely online program where students can attend classes any time, anywhere from a computer with Internet connection.
    • Provide a broad understanding of library and information science and prepare students to provide library and information services in a rapidly changing technological and global society.
    • Provide opportunities to develop and practice: critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, organization, and leadership skills.
    • Encourage and support creativity, initiative, and lifelong learning.
    • Provide relevant observational and practical experiences and opportunities for collaborative learning and networking within the profession.
    • Provide opportunities for gaining diverse and global perspectives.
    • Foster professional attitudes and a desire to provide excellent service.
    • Instill an understanding of and commitment to the high ethical standards of the profession.
  3. Provide general library skills and information literacy training for all students at CSI.
    • Provide library skills and information literacy credit courses as well as help faculty incorporate information literacy in their curricula.
    • Assist with the campus-wide assessment of information literacy initiatives.
  4. Provide leadership in the field of library and information science in south central Idaho.
    • Provide training, consulting, professional development, and continuing education opportunities for library and information service professionals in the area.
    • Offer courses that fulfill requirements of the Idaho State Department of Education’s Education Media Generalist/Library Media Specialist endorsement and teacher recertification.
    • Collaborate with the K-12 educational community and librarians in the area to promote information literacy initiatives.
    • Participate in the sharing of resources and expertise.
    • Encourage faculty to take on leadership responsibilities in relevant organizations in the field.
  5. Build lasting relationships with students and graduates.
    • Maintain contact with LIIS students and alumni.
    • Invite alumni to speak to students and give guest lectures.
    • Involve former students in recruitment, friend raising and fund raising.
  6. Develop a culture of assessment and continuous improvement.
    • Review the curriculum and its purpose regularly to ensure its relevancy, inclusiveness, and currency.
    • Offer support and incentives for continuous improvement.

Student Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Library and Information Science program will be able to:

  • Explain the role of libraries in a democratic society.
  • Discuss the range of services offered by libraries and other information service providers.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the history, philosophy, principles, policies and ethics of library and information science.
  • Understand the basics of information seeking behavior.
  • Understand procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, maintenance and weeding of library materials.
  • Explain the purpose and importance of the catalog.
  • Demonstrate understanding of subject headings, and use current and appropriate cataloging and classification schemes.
  • Articulate current issues and trends in the field.
  • Understand how information is created and the various media used to store and communicate information.
  • Demonstrate understanding of information organization, storage, retrieval, evaluation, dissemination, and utilization.
  • Explain the principles of information literacy.
  • Recognize and analyze information needs and effectively and efficiently locate, retrieve, evaluate, and disseminate information.
  • Apply concepts of user-centered customer service in meeting the information needs of individuals, groups and organizations.
  • Understand the information needs of diverse users and communities (varying cultural, educational, socio-economic backgrounds, and users with disabilities).
  • Assist patrons in using information to solve problems and take advantage of opportunities.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of research techniques and methods.
  • Apply appropriate and competent search strategies.
  • Select appropriate resources to match the customer’s needs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of print and electronic resources, as well as information retrieval processes and procedures.
  • Locate relevant, accurate and current information in different formats.
  • Conduct appropriate and effective reference interview.
  • Identify current and emerging technologies related to information services.
  • Articulate how technology is reshaping the profession.
  • Demonstrate basic competency in the use of relevant information technologies (hardware, software), as well as business machines used in libraries (photocopiers, scanners, fax machines, etc.).
  • Competently use digital communication and collaboration tools such as e-mail, discussion lists, newsgroups, chat, blogs, web conferencing, etc.
  • Summarize, synthesize, and communicate information in a variety of formats.
  • Articulate the importance of intellectual freedom and unobstructed access to information.
  • Relate the First Amendment to library and information services.
  • Recognize intellectual property, access, and security issues.
  • Recognize and respect library users’ right to privacy.
  • Articulate the role of state, regional and national professional organizations.
  • Identify laws and regulations that pertain to libraries.
