Federal grants are generally opportunities for developing new programs or infusing old ones. These grants are highly competitive, need to be innovative, require considerable investments of time for grant development and writing, may require heavy scientific and statistical emphasis, require institutional commitment to match resources and usually have relatively short deadlines. Thorough, in-depth knowledge of national trends is critical to successful proposals.
Proposal development for federal grants generally requires an institutional team effort that includes faculty, department chair(s), dean(s), vice presidents of instruction and planning and development, institutional research, the grant development office and Planning Council project approval.
The Grants Development office maintains files on corporate and private foundations; notifies respective faculty/staff through email and interoffice mail of possible corporate/private opportunities, and coordinates the development of these grants (advising, brainstorming, resource development expertise matching wants to grantmakers needs, and editing assistance.)
