The Difference between Graduation and Commencement

Graduation is actually receiving a degree from The College of Southern Idaho. A student is graduated from the college only after completing all degree or program requirements, completing a graduation application, and paying all outstanding fees.

Commencement is the graduation ceremony. It is a celebration of accomplishments. Students are not required to walk in the commencement ceremony, nor does it guarantee graduation. It is important to make sure you meet with your program advisor to confirm all requirements are being met.

Applying for Graduation

Degrees are not automatically awarded. Students MUST complete an Application for Graduation to be considered for a degree.

  1. How do I know whether I am ready to apply for graduation?
Check your Graduation Degree Audit Report. If you are ready to graduate, all requirements should show as “met” or “in progress”. See your faculty advisor if you have any questions.

  2. What is a degree audit?
A degree audit is the process of checking your records to ensure you have met all requirements for graduation.
This includes making sure transfer courses and substitutions have been properly applied.

  3. When should I apply?
Students should apply for graduation once all requirements have been met or during their final semester in which they are “in progress” of remaining coursework.

If you plan to graduate in... Priority application deadline is... Final application deadline is...
    Spring April 1st May 15th
    Summer April 1st* July 31st

*If you will complete all requirements during summer semester, but wish to participate in May commencement, you must:
    - have 10 or fewer required credits remaining at the end of Spring semester
    - apply by the Spring priority deadline to be included in the commencement program

  4. What happens if I miss the priority deadline?
If you miss the Spring graduation application deadline, your name will not be printed in the commencement program. Applications received after the priority deadline will result in a later mailing date and delayed arrival of your diploma.

  5. How will I know whether my application has been received?
Your browser will display a confirmation message once the application has been submitted without error. Once your application has been reviewed by Office of the Registrar, you will receive an email stating whether all requirements have been met.

Degree Posting and Diplomas

The posting of degrees begins the week after graduation. This process takes at least 4-6 weeks. After posting is complete, the information is available on the student’s transcript. Be sure to select “After Degree is Posted” when ordering a transcript, to ensure the degree has been posted. Diplomas are mailed to the student’s on-file mailing address (so it is important to have an up-to-date record) approximately 3 months after graduation.
