SENTENCES:behind bars

A creative writing workshop and behind the scenes look at the creative writing project at the Idaho State Penitentiary

October 1 from 1- 5 p.m. in CSI Fine Arts Theater

For almost three years, CSI Assistant Professor Shane Brown and Director of Community Enrichment Camille Barigar have volunteered their time at the Idaho State Correctional Center to teach creative writing to inmates. What resulted was a profound transformative learning experience for the prisoners (and teachers!) and a host of artistic collaborations in dance, theater, lectures, and masterclasses throughout the state of Idaho. Sweeping artistic collaborations sustained over a long period of time CAN have an impact on an entire community. Through dance, music, writing, and spoken word, the Sentences project has brought to life the experiences of the prisoners - from childhood to their time behind bars - and created a culture of empathy through the arts. In this special workshop, participants will learn about the Sentences project and the research on transformative learning and motivation, hear examples of prisoner writing and their stories, and then get the unique chance to participate in a three-hour creative writing workshop presented by Shane Brown and Camille Barigar, the creators and teachers of the prison program
