Program Overview

The Spanish major emphasizes oral, listening, and writing skills in order to acquire basic structures of the language. In addition, students study idioms and vocabulary used in ordinary situations. These courses provide an introduction to cultures, especially as cultures are reflected in language choice.

Spanish majors may pursue baccalaureate degrees in their area, and may also enter any number of professions including careers in translation, interpreting, research, teaching, business, and international relations. Further, students may use their language skills in bilingual activities in various professions such as teaching, health sciences, social services, and criminal justice, to name a few.

Completion of the following courses is designed to result in an associate degree, and meets the general education requirements at all Idaho public universities, Course selection should be coordinated to meet requirements for your intended transfer institution.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Spanish program, a student will be able to:

  1.  Initiate and sustain conversations in which they ask and answer questions, give and receive directions, introduce themselves, and report observations and information at a level appropriate to their language exposure and experience.
  2. Demonstrate creativity in choosing alternative methods (i.e., vocabulary, pantomime, or drawing) in social and/or professional situations where their communication skills have not been effective.
  3. Integrate various culturally appropriate behaviors into their conversations.
  4. Attain a conversational level of High Intermediate (based on ACTFL standards).
  5. Articulate material and concepts from previous Spanish classes and learn additional verb tenses, sharpen oral proficiency and expand on grammar and vocabulary.
  6. Demonstrate understanding of aspects of traditional and current Hispanic culture.
  7. Integrate various culturally appropriate behaviors into their conversations.
  8. Read texts at an appropriate level.
  9. Demonstrate an appreciation of Latin American attitudes, cultural characteristics, and political realities.
  10. Demonstrate a knowledge of the basic geography of Spanish-speaking countries.
