Workplace English

College and Career Readiness offers the opportunity for English language learners to improve their English while also obtaining job skills and/or vocational training. Classes are held on a rotating basis. Please note that to attend these classes, you must be willing to take an English assessment, be at least 16 years old, and otherwise not be enrolled in the public education system. Also, some classes below have entrance requirements and involve a multi-step registration process.

Healthcare

Assistance With Medications for English Language Learners

  • For English language learners who wish to complete CSI Workforce’s Assistance With Medications certification course
  • Covers legalities, medical terminology, and skills essential to help a person consume medications
  • Students learn relevant vocabulary and skills needed to pass certification exams
  • Students receive English language instruction and support from an additional instructor in the classroom
  • Students receive a state-recognized certificate of completion from CSI Workforce Development & Training upon successful completion of the certification exams
  • Course is required by Health & Welfare for healthcare employees already employed in assisted living situations
  • Regular College of Southern Idaho tuition and fees apply (*funding assistance may be available*)

Certified Nursing Assistant Prep (pre-CNA)

  • For English language learners who wish to take CSI Workforce’s face-to-face Certified Nursing Assistant course and become certified nursing assistants, but want more preparation first
  • Students begin to learn hands-on healthcare skills specific to the role
  • Students learn relevant vocabulary as well as reading and study skills needed to succeed in the face-to-face course
  • Students receive English language instruction and support
  • Students receive CPR training and certification
  • There is no cost for this class

Integrated Certified Nursing Assistant (I-CNA)

  • For English language learners who want to take CSI Workforce’s face-to-face Certified Nursing Assistant course and become certified nursing assistants (CNAs)
  • Students learn hands-on healthcare skills specific to the role
  • Students learn relevant vocabulary as well as basic reading, study, and test-taking skills needed to pass the state certification exams
  • Students receive English language instruction and support from an additional instructor in the classroom
  • Students receive CPR training and certification
  • Students receive state nursing assistant certification upon successful completion of the skills and written exams
  • Regular College of Southern Idaho tuition and fees apply (*funding assistance may be available*)

Technology

Introduction to Digital Literacy

  • For English language learners who are interersted in learning essential computer concepts
  • Students build important skills through hands-on computer practice in the areas of typing, mouse usage, keyboard shortcuts, the Windows operating system, Internet browsing, email, security basics, and file management
  • Students learn relevant vocabulary and concepts
  • Students receive English language instruction and support
  • There is no cost for this class

Advanced Digital Literacy (Survey)

  • For English language learners who are interested in learning more about careers in technology
  • Students learn about technology careers through hands-on computer practice in the areas of cybersecurity, web design for small businesses, productivity software, programming, troubleshooting, and more
  • Students learn relevant vocabulary and concepts
  • Students receive English language instruction and support
  • There is not cost for this class

Trade and Industry

English for Welding

  • For English language learners already enrolled in CSI's Welding program
  • Students learn relevant vocabulary, as well as reading, study, and test-taking skills needed to succeed in the program
  • Students receive English language instruction and support from an additional instructor in the classroom
  • Students receive additional lab time for English language practice supported by the English instructor
  • Students may achieve a basic technical certificate by completing at least two semesters of classes, or further certification and a degree with additional semesters
  • Regular College of Southern Idaho tuition and fees apply (*funding assistance may be available*)
  • Students must pass an entrance exam with the Welding department and demonstrate a minimum level of English competency

CDL permitting (CDL-P/CLP)

  • For English language learners seeking to obtain their CDL permit, or CLP
  • Students learn relevant vocabulary and test-taking skills needed to pass the three permitting exams at the DMV
  • Students receive English language instruction and support
  • Students receive guidance and support around attending a local trucking academy for behind-the-wheel instruction prior to testing for their CDL, including applying for funding assistance
  • There is no cost for this class

Workplace English

  • For company employees who are English language learners and sponsored by the company to improve their English language competency
  • Students learn relevant vocabulary and skills specific to their jobsite and employee role including machinery, signage, job duties, organizational structure, rules and regulations, safety, GMPs, quality control, and the company manual or employee handbook for benefits, PTO, and company policies, among other topics
  • Students receive English language instruction and support tailored to their workplace
  • There is no cost for this class
