Animal Science Program

Program Overview

The Animal Science degree provides students with a good basic education in the form and function of the various livestock species that are used for food and fiber. Students will be able to select superior animals using principles of evaluation, reproduction, and nutrition. They will understand the processes by which animals are used by humans. They will understand and use current technology to manipulate animal systems for maximum efficiency. In addition, students will improve research, writing, presentation, and mathematical skills.

Admission Requirements

There are specific requirements for enrollment in our career technical programs.  Students should be familiar with demands of a particular occupation and how that occupation matches with their individual career interests and goals. The specific requirements are established by the technical program.  A student who does not meet the established requirements for entrance into a program will have an opportunity to participate in the appropriate level courses to improve their skills for program consideration.  The program requirements and admission procedures can be obtained by contacting the program advisor.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Animal Science program, a student will be able to:

  1. Select the animals that will best fit a particular production system.
  2. Identify key elements required to maintain healthy animals.
  3. Describe production systems and explain why they are useful.
  4. Use technology and explain how it improves animal production.
  5. Create farm business plans and choose appropriate marketing models.
  6. Explain how local, regional, and global forces affect agricultural markets.
  7. Research, interpret, and communicate about animal agricultural issues and concerns.
