Over 60 Getting Fit Classes

This is a free program sponsored by the College of Southern Idaho, in partnership with the CSI Office on Aging, the Filer, Buhl, Shoshone, and Hagerman School Districts, and the Jerome, Rupert, Burley, Gooding, and Hailey Recreation Departments, as well as the Wendell Senior Center.

Program Goals and Benefits

Staying active becomes more important than ever during the second half of life. In fact, what has been considered "normal aging" may have more to do with a sedentary lifestyle than with the aging process. We completed a ten-week study period, during which our program participants, regardless of their age, made significant improvements in balance, muscular strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance using established functional measurement standards for older people.

We invite you to join us, where you may enjoy the following benefits:

  • Improvement in all aspects of cardiovascular functioning
  • A positive impact to the maintenance of independence as we age, including maintaining or improving the ability to do activities for daily living
  • Increased help to preserve and restore flexibility and range of motion
  • Improvement of strength, balance, posture, and mobility
  • Decrease anxiety about falling
  • A social and fun experience within a safe environment for appropriate physical activity

We will Prioritize Your Safety

Know the difference between normal vs. unhealthy reactions to physical activity. If you should experience an unhealthy reaction, stop exercise immediately.

Normal reactions include:

  • Increased depth and rate of breathing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Mild or moderate sweating
  • Dull ache as muscle becomes fatigued (relieved after exercise)

Unhealthy reactions include:

  • Pain for two hours after physical activity
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Increased weakness
  • Joint swelling or pain
  • Chest pain or heart palpitations
  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Abnormal pain
  • Fever (over 100 degrees)
  • Numbness or tingling in an arm or leg
