Dr. Joseph Gardner is a Professor of Chemistry in CSI’s Engineering, Physical Science, and Computer Science (EPCS) Department and has been part of the CSI community since 2007.
Drawn to chemistry for its mix of problem-solving, creativity, and real-world impact, Dr. Gardner enjoys helping students see how chemistry connects to everyday life and future careers. He earned his Ph.D. in Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry from Brigham Young University after completing his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Idaho State University. His background includes research in spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, ion chromatography, and materials chemistry, including postdoctoral work in materials and solar cell research.
At CSI, Dr. Gardner teaches Principles of Chemistry I and II and has also taught Introduction to Chemistry and Quantitative Chemical Analysis. He also serves as the Chemistry Program Advisor, helping students plan coursework, transfer pathways, and career goals.
Recently, Dr. Gardner has been heavily involved in modernizing CSI’s chemistry labs and instrumentation, particularly for Quantitative Analysis, to better align the program with workforce and transfer expectations. He has also mentored INBRE undergraduate research scholars, supported curriculum updates using new instructional technologies, and participated in STEM outreach across the Magic Valley.
What he enjoys most about teaching is working with students who are discovering what they’re capable of and building the confidence to succeed in STEM. Inside and outside the classroom, he supports students through hands-on learning, advising, and mentoring.
Outside of work, Dr. Gardner enjoys spending time with his family, working on hands-on creative projects, and helping his son explore 3D printing at home. A fun fact students might not expect is that he has collaborated on research internationally, including work in Japan.
