If you’re passionate about drawing, painting, photography, or working with your hands to create something new, the Visual Arts Associate of Arts degree at the College of Southern Idaho is the perfect place to start.
Whether you're just beginning your creative journey or looking to refine your skills, CSI offers a supportive, hands-on environment where you can build your talent, explore new media, and prepare for a future in the arts.
Start with the Foundations
Every artist begins by learning the fundamentals. In your first year at CSI, you’ll take courses that help you understand how visual art works and how to create it yourself.
- Design I (ARTS 105): Learn the elements and principles of design through 2D projects that build your understanding of layout, balance, contrast, and more.
- Drawing I (ARTS 109): Develop observational drawing skills using pencils and charcoal—perfect for learning how to draw what you see.
- Art History I & II (ARTS 101 & 102): Explore how art has shaped the world, from ancient cultures to modern masterpieces.
Explore Visual Storytelling and Photography
If you're drawn to capturing the world through a lens, CSI’s photography classes offer both traditional and digital approaches.
- Photography Darkroom I & II (ARTS 251 & 252): Learn how to shoot on film and develop your photos by hand using black-and-white darkroom techniques.
- Digital Photography (ARTS 253): Dive into DSLR camera work, lighting, and photo editing using software like Adobe Lightroom.
Develop Your Style Through Painting and Drawing
As you progress, you’ll move beyond the basics and begin developing your personal style in both 2D and color-based media.
- Drawing II (ARTS 212): Take your drawing to the next level with more expressive techniques and creative projects.
- Painting I & II (ARTS 215 & 275): Experiment with color theory, acrylics, and oils as you build advanced painting skills and explore your own visual voice.
- Figure Drawing (ARTS 260): Study human anatomy and movement to improve your life drawing—great for animation, illustration, or fine art.
Printmaking and Mixed Media
If you love texture, process, and experimentation, CSI’s printmaking course opens the door to one-of-a-kind artwork.
- Intro to Printmaking (ARTS 209): Use tools like etching plates, carving blocks, and ink rollers to create unique images by hand. You’ll learn both relief and intaglio processes—hands-on art that blends tradition and innovation.
Get Hands-On with 3D Art and Ceramics
Do you love building, shaping, and creating in three dimensions? Our ceramics and sculpture classes help you work with clay, tools, and materials in new and exciting ways.
- Ceramics I & II (ARTS 225 & 226): Begin with hand-building techniques, then move into wheel-throwing and glazing. You’ll craft everything from functional pottery to sculptural pieces.
- Sculpture (ARTS 231): Explore form, structure, and material as you create work using wood, clay, and other sculptural media.
Wrap It All Together with Portfolio Development
In your final semester, you’ll take:
- Art Portfolio (ARTS 280): A course that helps you prepare your best work for transfer, job applications, or exhibitions. You’ll get feedback, refine your work, and learn how to present yourself professionally as an artist.
